The words on the online food forums is that if you ain’t had seafood until you’ve had it from Usthaad Hotel. So, with hungry stomachs and mouths watering in anticipation of an ethnic treat, me and my friends set off in search of this eatery out in the streets in Vizhinjam.
Deep inside the corner of a busy street, this place has got an unique decor with bright colors. I was surprised by the neatness in a medium class restaurant and more surprised was the quality of food as it satisfied my taste buds..not just me my friends too :)
It’s not a restaurant for everyone, especially for those who are used to the "so called" Star hotels. We need to look beyond the dim interiors, questionable crockery, the excuse for a sink and greasy tables and benches and instead, focus on the satisfied faces of the diners and the waste plates heaped on empty tables, while you wait to get seats.
A closer view on the menu.....
Being close to Vizhinjam harbor, the city’s fishing capital, it’s seafood and only fried seafood on the menu. A whole avoli fry marinated in a spicy masala of red flakes is the star of the menu. Also a big fat Ayala(mackerel) or Paara (Malabar trevally) is there to tempt our taste buds. In addition to that they will also have neymeen (seer-fish), neymeen choora (tuna) and so on. My friends tried prawns (with shells intact) which according to them was the best. It was accompanied by appam and kerala porotta. We usually get an extra side dish of fish gravy. The best way to finish off the meal is with a glass of black tea, laced with mint leaves. Its a quite refreshing end to a delicious meal....
I would recommend this to all the foodies...its a must go restaurant..you can have your tummies filed with delicious food and that too at a very affordable price.
